Learn more about the 81st Golden Globe Awards, airing on CBS Jan. 7.
Here’s everything you need to know about Sunday’s 81st Golden Globe Awards.
The most nominated motion pictures are Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” (with nine) and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” (with eight). Apple’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Searchlight’s “Poor Things” follow with seven nominations each. A24’s “Past Lives” received five nominations.
The annual award show will air Jan. 7 on a new network: CBS and Paramount+ with Showtime. (The Globes will also be on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the special airs in the U.S. only.)
There will be 19 cameras in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, to capture the action. And they have a lot of people to capture – about 1,100, according to producers. One of the showrunners, Glenn Weiss, said they want home audiences to get an immersive experience, to feel like they are also in the room.
We've got all you need to know, plus some records that could be broken.

The top television series or programs are HBO’s “Succession” (with nine), FX’s “The Bear” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” with five apiece.
For film distributors, Netflix led with 13, followed by Warner Bros. with 12, and A24 and Universal with 11 each.
Among TV distributors, HBO/Max earned 17 nominations, followed by Netflix with 15.
The lineup includes 25 returning categories, plus two new ones: Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures. The latter category recognizes movies that earned $150 million or more at the box office, or equivalent viewing numbers in streaming. Voters then decided on the eight nominees, based on artistry and excellence.
Host
Jo Koy will host the show, airing live coast to coast on Sunday, Jan. 7, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., on CBS and Paramount+ with Showtime.
“We are thrilled to have Jo host the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards and bring his infectious energy and relatable humor to kick off Hollywood’s award season. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for the stars in the room and a global audience,” said Helen Hoehne, Golden Globes President. “We know Jo is bringing his A-game.”
This marks the comedian’s first hosting role for a major awards show.
Koy starred in the Universal Picture film "Easter Sunday," based on his own experiences and stand-up comedy. He has also appeared in Disney’s "Haunted Mansion" and voiced the character Bendo in Netflix’s animated film "Monkey King." He’ll next be voicing the character of The Monkey King in the animated feature film, "Tiger’s Apprentice," premiering on Paramount+ Feb. 2.

No Special Awards in 2024
According to the Golden Globes, there will be no presentation of the Cecil B. DeMille and Carol Burnett Awards this year. This is mostly because of the expanded list of nominees for each category – 25 of the competitive categories expanded from five nominees to six.
The Globes notes that this is not a permanent change, with future awards slated to be given.
Digital Pre-Show

Records that could be broken
There are a number of Golden Globe records that could be broken Sunday night. Here are some of the possible records, courtesy of VegasInsider.com.
OVERALL RECORDS
Meryl Streep (“Only Murders In The Building”) could tie the all time record for the most wins by an individual (10), which is currently held by Barbra Streisand, and she could also extend her own record as the individual with most wins for acting (currently eight, could be nine) if she wins in the Best Supporting Performance in a Series category.
Three films have a chance to tie the record for the most Golden Globes won by a film in one night: “Barbie” and “Killers Of The Flower Moon” could win seven trophies, tying “La La Land” while “Oppenheimer” could tie or break the record since they can potentially win eight trophies (“Barbie” is the most nominated film with nine nominations, but three of the nominations are in the same category, Best Original Song; “Poor Things” also received seven nominations, but two of those are in the same category, Best Supporting Actor).
Emma Stone could achieve a rare feat of winning a Golden Globe for two acting performances in one night since she is nominated for her film role in “Poor Things” and TV role in “The Curse” (this was previously achieved only four times by: Sigourney Weaver, Joan Plowright, Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet).
FILM RECORDS
Best Actress – Drama
- Lily Gladstone (“Killers Of The Flower Moon”) could become the first indigenous actress to win in the Best Drama Actress category
- Greta Lee (“Past Lives”) could become the first actress of Asian descent to win in the Best Drama Actress category
- Sandra Huller (“The Anatomy Of a Fall”) could become the first German actress to win the Best Drama Actress category
Best Actor – Drama
- Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers Of The Flower Moon”) could tie Tom Hanks & Jack Nicholson for the most wins in the Best Drama Actor category if he wins his third Golden Globe in 2024 – he previously won for “The Revenant” and “The Aviator”
Best Actress – Comedy
- Jennifer Lawrence (“Hard Feelings”) could equal the record for the most wins in the Best Comedy Actress category, which is currently held by Julie Andrews & Rosalind Russell who won 3 times – Lawrence won 2 times in the past for “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Joy”
- Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”) could become only the second African-American actress to win in the Best Comedy Actress category - the first one was Angela Bassett who won 20 years ago for “What’s Love Got To Do With It”; the role of Celie which Fantasia portrays could also achieve a rare feat of becoming a role that won both in the drama category and the comedy category since Whoopi Goldberg won for portraying Celie in the Best Drama Actress in 1985
Best Supporting Actress
- Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) could equal the record for the most most wins in the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture category if she wins her second Golden Globe in 2024 after winning in 2020 for “The Mauritanian” – at the moment, it is a 6-way tie
Best Director
- Martin Scorsese (“Killers Of The Flower Moon”) could tie Elia Kazan as the director with the most wins in the Best Director Category if he wins his 4th Golden Globe in 2024 – previously he won for “Gangs of New York,” “The Departed” and “Hugo”)

Best TV Series – Drama
- “Succession” or “The Crown” could equal the record for most wins in the Best Drama Series category, which is currently held by “Mad Men” and “X-files” with three wins (both “Succession” and “The Crown” have won twice thus far)
Best Actor – Drama
- Brian Cox (“Succession”) or Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) could join a five-way tie for most wins in the Best TV Drama Actor category if either of them win their 2nd trophy – Cox previously won for “Succession” in 2019 and Strong also won for “Succession” in 2021
- Pedro Pascal (“The Last Of Us”) could become the first Chilean actor to win in the Best TV Drama Actor category
Best Actress – Drama
- “The Crown” could extend its record as the series with the most different actors winning the Best TV Drama Actress category if Imelda Staunton wins, which would make her the fourth one to do so after Claire Foy, Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin; it would also make it a third time that an actress wins for the portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in this category since both Foy and Colman won for portraying Queen Elizabeth II (*Helen Mirren also won for portraying Queen Elizabeth II, but she did so in the Best Film Actress, Drama category)

The golden trophy was given a slight redesign with the words "Hollywood Foreign Press Assn." being replaced near the base by "Golden Globes." The former HFPA is no more, but its philanthropic mission lives on in the newly formed Golden Globes Foundation "devoted to grant making for various organizations including arts, education, journalism, film restoration and humanitarian programs benefitting underserved communities."
