Nominations were announced Dec. 11 for the 81st Golden Globe Awards.
Cedric “The Entertainer” and Wilmer Valderrama got up early to help reveal the 2024 nominations at an in-person announcement at the Beverly Hilton. They were joined by Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne and presented the nominees for each of the 27 award categories. Last year, Mayan Lopez and Selenis Leyva got up to help reveal the nominations.
The lineup includes 25 returning categories, plus two new ones: Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures. The latter category recognizes movies that earned $150 million or more at the box office, or equivalent viewing numbers in streaming. Voters then decided on the eight nominees, based on artistry and excellence.
The most nominated motion pictures are Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” (with nine) and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” (with eight). Apple’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Searchlight’s “Poor Things” follow with seven nominations each. A24’s “Past Lives” received five nominations.
The top television series or programs are HBO’s “Succession” (with nine), FX’s “The Bear” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” with five apiece.
For film distributors, Netflix led with 13, followed by Warner Bros. with 12, and A24 and Universal with 11 each.
Among TV distributors, HBO/Max earned 17 nominations, followed by Netflix with 15.
The 81st Golden Globe Awards will air live coast to coast on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on CBS and Paramount+ with Showtime.
The Golden Globes returned last year after a year on broadcast hiatus.
