The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced nominations on Monday for its 79th Golden Globe Awards.
Snoop Dogg got up early to help reveal the 2022 nominations at an in-person announcement. He was joined by new HFPA president Helen Hoehne. Last year, Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson got up early to help reveal the nominations from their homes.
By distributor, Netflix was the giant again this year, leading with 17 film nominations plus 10 TV nominations. HBO/HBO Max followed with 15 TV nominations. Among TV distributors, Hulu received 10 nominations, followed by AppleTV+ with eight TV nominations and four film nominations.
The most nominated motion pictures are "Belfast" and "The Power of the Dog" with seven nominations each. The top television series or programs are "Succession" with five nominations, followed by "The Morning Show" and "Ted Lasso" with four nominations.
This year, it is important to note there will be no broadcasted ceremony. NBC announced on May 10 that it would not broadcast the ceremony in 2022, with the hope to bring back the show in 2023. This decision followed increased criticism of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which puts on the Globes, for reportedly unethical practices and a lack of diversity among its membership revealed by an investigation by the Los Angeles Times.
Because of this, the HFPA has taken the last eight months to reform, completely overhauling its bylaws, implementing sweeping changes that address ethics and code of conduct, diversity, equity and inclusion, governance, and membership. The HFPA also admitted its largest and most diverse class to date of 21 new members, all of whom are first-time Golden Globe voters.
In a Golden Globes first, submissions were not required for award consideration this year. However, filmmakers/studios could request their content to be considered only for specific categories.
