Editor James A. Molnar makes his final predictions for the 93rd Academy Awards.
Download our 2021 Oscars ballot |
"Mank" is the seventh black-and-white film to be nominated for Costume Design and the seventeenth for Cinematography since separate categories for color and black-and-white films were merged in 1967. Though I don't expect it to win for either of those categories.
"Mank" could leave the big night with only one Oscar, for Production Design.
Could "The Trial of the Chicago 7" be a spoiler for Best Picture, which "Nomadland" seems to be the one to beat? There’s a chance, especially with the preferential ballot employed for the top category by the Academy’s accounting firm, PwC. With no other wins predicted, chances are probably slim.

I'm predicting "Nomadland" will take home five statuettes (out of six nominations) with “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” getting three (out of five nominations).
Chadwick Boseman, who died on August 28, 2020, is the seventh performer to receive a posthumous nomination and I'm predicting that he will become the third to win. Peter Finch was the first posthumous acting winner (Actor in a Leading Role, “Network,” 1976) and Heath Ledger was the second (Actor in a Supporting Role, “The Dark Knight,” 2008).
We'll all find out what happens Sunday night. In the meantime, we're here to help you win your Oscar pool or ballot contest.

Final Tally Predictions
The 93rd Academy Awards, for outstanding film achievements of 2020, will be presented on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 225 countries worldwide.
One thing is for sure: Netflix should do really well come Oscar Sunday. The studio has the most nominations, with 35 nominations in total for titles such as “Mank” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” In distant second is Amazon with 12 nominations.
Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”) is the first woman to receive four nominations in a single year. Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”) is the third woman with three nominations in a single year; Sofia Coppola and Fran Walsh both accomplished that feat in 2003. Fennell and Zhao are the sixth and seventh women to be nominated in the Directing category; it is the first time more than one woman has been nominated for Directing in the same year. Fennell is the first woman to be nominated for her feature film directing debut. Zhao is the first woman of color to be nominated for Directing. Previous women nominated for Directing are Lina Wertmüller, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow (the only winner), and Greta Gerwig.
I'm predicting Zhao will take home three Oscars and Fennell will take home the Oscar for Original Screenplay.
