Academy invites record 774 from 57 countries to join its ranks

As it prepares to celebrate its 90th Oscars, The Academy has broken its invitation record with a group of 774 artists and executives from 57 countries being invited to join its exclusive ranks on June 28.

As it prepares to celebrate its 90th Oscars, The Academy has broken its invitation record with a group of 774 artists and executives from 57 countries being invited to join its exclusive ranks on Wednesday.

From actors Dwayne Johnson and Amy Poehler to musicians Lin-Manuel Miranda to Justin Timberlake, this is the biggest invited list we've ever seen.

See the full list by branch below.

Statistics
Transparency and the sharing of statistics of its membership continues the trend started last year, led by outgoing Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, who has made it a mission of the Academy for greater transparency and diversity.

In a specially created website, the Academy presents the entire list of invitees and offers a statement and welcome from Boone Issacs that reads:
We’re proud to invite our newest class to the Academy. The entire motion picture community is what we make of it. It’s up to all of us to ensure that new faces and voices are seen and heard, and to take a shot on the next generation the way someone took a shot on each of us.

Check out all of the invitation statistics provided by the Academy:

History

Last year's record of 683 was more than the double the record set in 2015 and included 41 percent people of color, increasing the membership's overall profile to 11 percent people of color, up three percentage points, if all accept.

In recent years, more than 270 were invited to join the nonprofit organization known for its iconic Oscar (271 in 2014, 276 in 2013, 176 in 2012 and 178 in 2011).

The Academy only sends out invitations once per year. New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in the fall.
