Academy invites record 683 to join its ranks, 41% are people of color

The Academy has broken its invitation record with a group of 683 artists and executives being invited to join its exclusive ranks on June 29.

The Academy has broken its invitation record with a group of 683 artists and executives being invited to join its exclusive ranks on Wednesday.

From actors Idris Elba and Vivica A. Fox to musicians Mary J. Blige to Will.i.am, this is the biggest invited list we've ever seen.

Among the invitees are some of this year's Oscar winners: Brie Larson, Mark Rylance, Alicia Vikander, production designers Colin Gibson and Lisa Thompson of "Mad Max: Fury Road," documentarians James Gay-Rees and Asif Kapadia of "Amy," film editor Margaret Sixel of "Mad Max: Fury Road," makeup artist Lesley Vanderwalt of "Mad Max: Fury Road," producer Michael Sugar of "Spotlight," short film creators Serena Armitage and Benjamin Cleary of "Stutterer" and Pato Escala and Gabriel Osorio of "Bear Story," sound mixer Ben Osmo and sound editor David White of "Mad Max: Fury Road," visual effects supervisors Sara Bennett and Paul Norris and Andrew Whitehurst of "Ex Machina" and screenwriters Adam McKay and Charles Randolph of "The Big Short" and Josh Singer of "Spotlight."

The list of invited — more than the double the record set last year — includes 41 percent people of color, increasing the membership's overall profile to 11 percent people of color, up three percentage points, if all accept. In recent years, more than 270 were invited to join the nonprofit organization known for its iconic Oscar (271 in 2014, 276 in 2013, 176 in 2012 and 178 in 2011).

Transparency and the sharing of statistics of its membership is unprecedented for the nonprofit organization. After two years of #OscarsSoWhite, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs has made it a mission of the Academy for greater transparency and diversity.

In a specially created website, the Academy presents the entire list of invitees and offers a statement and welcome from Boone Issacs that reads:

On behalf of the Academy, I am honored to extend membership invitations to 683 distinguished filmmakers, artists and executives who represent the best in our global film community, and who have made a lasting impact on movie fans everywhere.

We’re proud to welcome these new members to the Academy, and know they view this as an opportunity and not just an invitation, a mission and not just a membership.

This class continues our long-term commitment to welcoming extraordinary talent reflective of those working in film today. We encourage the larger creative community to open its doors wider, and create opportunities for anyone interested in working in this incredible and storied industry.

The Academy only sends out invitations once per year. New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in the fall.
