Nominations for Foreign Language are done in two phases. The Phase I committee, consisting of several hundred Los Angeles-based members, screened last year’s 63 eligible films between mid-October and mid-January. The group’s top six choices, augmented by three additional selections voted by the Academy’s Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee, constitute the shortlist, announced Jan. 18.
Once a shortlist is announced around late December or early January, the films will be winnowed down until five remain for nominations, being announced in 94 days (a week-and-a-half earlier than this year, on Jan. 10, 2013).
The 2012 submissions are:
New rules announced this summer no longer require Foreign Language Film contenders to be exhibited in 35mm or DCP in their countries of origin, but still must be submitted to the Academy in those formats.
The 85th Academy Awards, for outstanding film achievements of 2012, will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 225 countries worldwide.
