Ninety-seven Original Scores from eligible feature-length films have made the cut to contend for the 84th Academy Awards, the Academy announced Thursday.
All members of the Music Branch will vote in the order of their preference for no more than five achievements. The five receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations to vie for the Oscar.
To be eligible, "the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer. Scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible," according to the Academy.
Among the contenders, some composers are featured more than once. Thomas Newman, 10-time Oscar nominee in the music categories, has four contenders: "The Adjustment Bureau," "The Debt," "The Help" and "The Iron Lady." Michael Giacchino, who won the Oscar for 2009's "Up," also has four contenders: "Cars 2," "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol," "Monte Carlo" and "Super 8."
Alexandre Desplat, nominated last year for "The King's Speech," has three contenders: "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" (which he composed in three weeks), "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2" and "The Ides of March." Other composers with three contenders are Tyler Bates, Mark Isham, Henry Jackman and Alex Heffes.
John Williams, was last nominated for work in 2005, returns to contention with two: "The Adventures of Tintin" and "War Horse." Williams, a 45-time nominee and 5-time winner, is tied with composer Alfred Newman for the most Oscar nominations.
Here are the 97 eligible scores, along with composer, listed below in alphabetical order by film title:
