The Academy invited viewers to the Oscars this year and now it's extended the invitation for a select 178 to join the exclusive organization.
Those "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" have been invited to join, the Academy announced on Friday. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2011 to the Academy’s roster of members.
A maximum of 211 new members could have been invited for 2011, according to membership policies. However, several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than allotted. A candidate must be sponsored by at least two members of the branch for which the person may qualify. Voting membership has remained at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
Individuals nominated for an Academy Award® who are not already members will be considered for membership.
"In an unprecedented gesture, the list of new members includes documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington, who was killed in action in Libya in April," the press release said. Hetherington was nominated this year for his film “Restrepo,” but died prior to the Academy’s meetings to select new members. The Documentary Branch proposed that Hetherington’s name still be included. The governors agreed.
Among the invitees are new Academy executives Dawn Hudson, CEO, and Ric Robertson, COO, CBS CEO Leslie Moonves, Russell Brand, Robbie Coltrane, Bradley Cooper, Jesse Eisenberg, Jennifer Garner, Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer Lawrence, Jacki Weaver and some of this year's Oscar winners.
Also invited are John Coffey, Risa Gertner and Robert C. Rosenthal to Associate membership, which does not include the ability to vote for Academy Awards. Individuals invited to join multiple branches must select one branch upon accepting membership. New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in September.
